Programs

The 2016 Sunday at the Library series begins Feb 7, at 2:30 pm, when Deborah Harte Felmeth presents Syria – Remember Me. The visual images of turmoil in Syria are all too evident in today’s mass media as news and political machinations instill a culture of fear, wittingly or unwittingly, and shockingly few images of the cultural diversity, history and beauty of the Syrian people can be found. Here then is an opportunity to learn about another side of Syria through the lens of simple photographs of daily living.
Ms. Felmeth fell in love with Syria during a trip in 1991. She and her husband divided their time after that equally between Damascus and their Vermont home until the recent upheavals and tragedy of war. She works professionally as a piano and voice teacher, and is an avid photographer.
Please note that this event takes place at 2:30 pm, rather than the usual time of 2:00 pm

Remembering Our Foundations in Sandgate, Arlington, and Sunderland
How old is Sandgate, Arlington, or Sunderland? Our three-town area, like the rest of Vermont, can have three separate dates identified for our founding.
The earliest date is based on the date the original charter was issued by the New Hampshire royal governor, Benning Wentworth. Arlington’s charter was issued on July 28, 1761, Sunderland’s the following day on July 29, and Sandgate’s thirteen days later on August 11. Based on the charter date, our towns will be 255 years old this year.
The second possible founding date could be January 15, 1777. On this date, the New Hampshire Grants declared themselves an independent government from all other jurisdictions, including Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Quebec. The residents of the new republic called the territory New Connecticut. It was about six months later on June 2, 1777, that the delegates adopted the name Vermont. Based on the founding of the republic of Vermont our towns are 239 years old in 2016.
The final date to consider is the day Vermont became the fourteenth state in the union known as the United States. A state constitutional convention voted in favor of the union on January 10, 1791. Vermont officially became the fourteenth state on March 4, 1791. If admission to the United States were our birthday, 2016 would mark our 225th birthday.
Does thirty years make that much difference? In our three towns it does, because what happened after 1791 seems relatively tame compared to what happened before 1791. As a special program we will look at the period between 1761 and 1791 and survey the events and history that influenced what Sandgate, Arlington, and Sunderland have become. Keep Saturday March 19, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm open for this special event.

Canfield Gallery

Mostly Berkshires and Brooklyn: Paintings, by Robert H. Lafond
A Williamstown, MA artist, Robert Lafond, who is well known to New England art lovers, will be showing oil and pastel landscapes at The Canfield Gallery from February 4 through March 1. There will be a meet-the-artist reception in the gallery on Saturday, February 6 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
A skilled and prolific painter, Robert’s work is routinely juried into and has earned awards from the Southern Vermont Arts Center, as well as galleries in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Robert has an impressive art background: he studied at the Boston MuseumSchool and later was graduated from Princeton University, earning a degree (with highest honors) in Art History. While at Princeton he was mentored by painter Esteban Vicente and then worked at the Princeton University Art Museum for almost 20 years.
Currently Robert focuses his outdoor and studio work on the landscapes and cityscapes of the places he knows and loves: the Berkshires, Brooklyn and the Maine coast. Seeing his work at this exhibition will give you the visual pleasure of observing the artist’s reactions to the physical world that has influenced and shaped his life. Some of it may even intersect or resonate with your own “life-shaping places.”

Volunteer Opportunities

The Advocate Group of the Martha Canfield Library invites you join us on the fourth Friday of each month at 10:30 am in the Library.
