The Canfield Gallery

The Canfield Gallery will present an exhibition of pastel and oil paintings by the late, celebrated Vermont plein air artist Mallory Bratton Rich from June 27 through August 28.

A founding member of the Canfield Gallery, Ms. Rich was a widely-known and well-loved leader of the fine art community that is centered in the small hamlet of Arlington, home of Norman Rockwell, Rockwell Kent and other accomplished American artists.

Her pastels and oil paintings were prized for their fresh, pure color, strong composition and sensitive brushwork. She studied with Albert Handell of Santa Fe, Stuart Shils at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, along with Gil Perry and Virginia McNiece of Vermont. Her work has been featured in Equinox Magazine and American Artist’s 30th Annual National Competition Issue and has been a resident artist at The Vermont Studio Center and at Great Spruce Island, Maine. Her work has been carried by galleries in New York and New England and now hangs in many private and corporate collections. She passed away in May of 2025 after a long struggle with cancer and is survived by her husband Harry A. Rich, also a celebrated painter, and her children, Whit, Steven and Jennifer.

The Canfield Gallery is a non-profit art gallery serving the communities along the Battenkill River and southwestern Vermont. Canfield Gallery Exhibit – Shari Siegel

The Canfield Gallery, located at the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library in Arlington, will host Shari Siegel’s fascinating exhibit titled “Palimpsest…An exploration through mixed media collage of the liminal and imaginal spaces at the intersections of magic, memory, nature, myth and imagination.”; from September 11 – Oct. 23, 2026.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 11, from 4:00 – 6:00pm at the
Canfield Gallery with Shari providing a talk about her work at 5:00pm.

Shari Siegel grew up surrounded by the creation of art. Her mother was a working artist, and both of her parents ensured her early exposure to both visual and performing arts. As a teenager, Shari pursued black and white photography and various needle arts, and had an internship restoring clothing at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A passionate supporter of dance, Shari developed, underwrote and helped create in
collaboration with the dancers a quilt commemorating the 60th  anniversary of the
founding of American Ballet Theatre, which was displayed (and auctioned off) at the
Metropolitan Opera House during ABT’s spring season in 2000, and later hung in the
ABT Studios in Manhattan.

Shari’s mixed media collage practice has been informed by classes at the Southern
Vermont Art Center; the Museum of Modern Art; Rhode Island School of Design –
Continuing Education Program; Peters Valley School of Craft; and Pratt Institute –
Continuing & Professional Studies.

Shari’s art is inspired by her love of literature, dance, mythology, science, travel, nature
and the cosmos.  Her commitment to sustainability as well as her artistic vision lead to
her use of a wide assortment of repurposed and found objects in her work.
